Sharpen Capital is an Asset Management company focused on structured credit, growth capital and special situations for the Brazilian and US markets. With a diversified sector focus, Sharpen Capital seeks to be an allocation solution for Ultra High Net-Worth Individuals (UHNWI) and Family Offices on proprietary investments with superior expected returns. Sharpen Capital’s team has a long track-record in risk assessment, resource allocation and management of investments across the capital structure spectrum. Sharpen Capital aims to provide capital solutions for companies across several industries with the ability to actively unlock value over the life of an investment.

Our Vision is to become the preferred alternative for high return allocation for our investors, while being viewed as the partner-of-choice for companies, platforms and entrepreneurs looking for smart capital in growth equity, credit opportunities and special situations.

Investment Strategies

Sharpen Capital targets a pro-active approach to its investments, which enables a concentrated process of long-term value generation. We propose to operate through flexible structures and exit horizons, always seeking the value maximization for our Limited Partners and perpetuation of the value generated. Our partners and related parties expect to co-invest up to 20% of the total equity and work with entrepreneurs and executives to maximize the value of the main strategic and operational initiatives.

Typically, we are active member of the Board of our invested companies, but we also can temporarily join management teams, always partnering with entrepreneurs and executives to maximize the value of the main strategic and operational initiatives at the company level.

The Team

Raphael Ades

Partner

Co-founder of Sharpen Capital, Chief Financial Officer and effective member of the Investment Committee

Prior to Sharpen Capital, Mr. Ades was Founder and CEO of Floresvale, a sustainable reforest company with 5,000 hectares of land reforested eucalyptus in Brazil brought to life by investment funds raised and managed by him; Co-founder, COO, CFO and Chairman of the Board of Simpress, the largest outsourcing printing company in the Brazilian market with over 60,000 printers, an investment of Gavea Investimentos sold to Samsung Electronics in 2015; Member of the founding Committee of Internal Audits and Compliances of Ideal Invest, a leading private student loans company in the Brazilian market, controlled by Itau-Unibanco; Founded and structured an array of successful operating platforms in both the Brazilian and US markets in information technology, printing, e-commerce, and finance.

Graduated from Fundação Getúlio Vargas in São Paulo (FGV-EAESP) with degrees in Business Management and a Master’s in Marketing and Finance. Native Portuguese speaker and fluent in English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Ricardo Costa

Partner

Co-founder of Sharpen Capital, Head of Equity and Execution of Investments and effective member of the Investment Committee

Prior to Sharpen Capital, Mr. Costa was the Vice President responsible for investments in Brazil at Jaguar Growth Partners, a NY based fund focused in Real Estate Private Equity for EM; From 2010 to 2014 was a Partner at Gávea Investimentos, one of the largest alternative investment managers in Brazil with over US$ 7 billion in AUM, having led several investments in the retail, logistics, services and telecom sectors, besides being a Board Member of CSS (Cell Site Solutions), a co-investment of Gávea and Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking, Rumo Logística and Simpress among others; CFO and interim manager of CSS from 2013 to 2014; From 2005 to 2010 was a Principal at Votorantim Novos Negócios, the PE and VC arm of Votorantim Group, one of the largest Latin American industrial conglomerates, where he was responsible for the investments in IT/BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) and Services sectors and Board Member of TIVIT, one of the largest IT/BPO services companies in Latin America.

Graduated from Fundação Getúlio Vargas in São Paulo (FGV-EAESP) with a B.A in Business Administration and holds an M.B.A. (with honors) from Columbia Business School in New York. Native Portuguese speaker and fluent in English and Spanish.

Gilberto Faiwichow

Partner

CIO and effective member of the Investment Committee

Over 30 years of experience in the financial industry. Before joining Sharpen Capital in July 2018, Mr. Faiwichow was the founder and managing partner of BRL Capital, an asset management firm, and manager of the hedge fund BRL Titan; From 2011 to 2015 was the Vice President of Treasury and Director of Investor Relations of Banco Indusval & Partners; From 2009 to 2011 founded BRL Capital and managed the hedge fund BRL Titan; in 2008 was at Fiducia Partners managing the hedge fund that later became BRL Titan; From 2005 to 2007 was at Black River Asset Management, the global asset management arm of Cargill, managing the hedge fund that would later become BRL Titan; From 2003 to 2004 founded Zoom Asset Management and managed Zoom, the hedge fund that would later merge with the hedge fund of Black River and later become BRL Titan; From 1992 to 2000 co-founded and was a Managing Director of Banco Rendimento; until 1992 was the Financial Director and Treasurer of Banco ING.

Graduated from Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo (POLI-USP) in Metallurgical Engineering, Post Graduated and Master’s in Economy at Fundação Getúlio Vargas with extension at New York University. Native Portuguese speaker and fluent in English.

Wilson Ohara

Partner

Head of Credit and effective member of the Investment Committee

Over 20 years of experience in the financial industry. Before joining Sharpen Capital in July 2018, Mr. Ohara was a Director in the Financing & Solutions Group at Deutsche Bank managing the relationship of a portfolio of ultra large, large and mid-size corporates for structured credit, derivatives and debt capital markets; From 2016 to 2017 was a Partner at Triskelion Capital dedicated to the origination of Special Situations, Distressed and Private Equity opportunities for a nascent US-based alternative investments fund; From 2014 to 2016 was a Superintendent of Credit Markets at Banco Votorantim focused on International DCM and Structured Credit; From 2010 to 2014 was a Director at Deutsche Bank in the Capital Markets & Treasury Solutions Group working both on the origination and product groups; From 1998 to 2010 was a Vice President at JPMorgan Chase in São Paulo and New York in International DCM, Syndicated Loans, Acquisition Finance and Credit Risk Management.

Jorge Stegmann

Principal – Investments

Before joining Sharpen Capital in July 2017, Mr. Stegmann worked in the UK as a Sales Regional Manager for Hilti, a manufacturing company based in Liechtenstein, a global innovation leader in power tools and solutions for the construction sector. From 2008 to 2013 led a Financial Planning team at Braskem, the largest chemical company in Brazil with over US$ 13 billion in revenues, in different multidisciplinary projects including global cost reduction, post-merger integration of finance, processes and systems and maintenance efficiency plan; From 2005 to 2008, was an Associate at Gradus Management Consultants, a well-respected Brazilian consulting firm with more than 300 projects for over 70 customers on 25 countries, working on a variety of industries: energy, consumer goods, electronics, media and construction.

Jorge graduated from Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo (POLI-USP), where he received a B.Eng. in Industrial Engineering, and holds an M.B.A. from London Business School. Jorge is a native Portuguese speaker and is fluent in English.

Fabio Alvarez

Principal – Investments

Before joining Sharpen Capital, Mr. Alvarez worked in the financial area of several companies from different sectors. From 2017 to 2018 he worked in the restructuring of debts in the scope of the holding company and subsidiaries of the Odebrecht Group in the amount of R$ 5 billion , where he also worked with the sale of credit rights in the amount of R $ 500 million; From 2016 to 2017 was CIO of Odeprev, the pension fund of Odebrecht’s workers, managing portfolios in fixed income, hedge funds, equity and illiquid investments; From 2015 to 2016 worked for F3 Capital responsible for Risk & Compliance and Institutional Clients; From 2011 to 2015 was responsible for Odebrecht’s Risk Management, Derivatives, Financial Investments and Corporate Finance teams (ODBR Corp); From 2009 to 2010 structured and executed syndicated loans, capital markets, project finance and IPO processes for Rota das Bandeiras Concessionaire (CRDBBR Corp); From 2006 to 2009 was part of Braskem’s Risk Management, Operations and M&A teams; From 2005 to 2006, worked for Accenture with business process management consulting.

Graduated in Mechatronics Engineering from Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo (POLI-USP) and holds an M.B.A. in Financial Engineering from Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo. Native Portuguese speaker and fluent in Spanish and English.

Leonardo Inson

General Counsel – Legal and Compliance

Before joining Sharpen Capital in March 2018, Mr. Inson was the Legal Manager and Compliance Officer on the turnaround of Zoom Editora Educacional, a leader in the technological education courseware market; From 2014 to 2016 led the licensing team on CSS (Cell Site Solutions), a co-investment of Gavea Investimentos and Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking, creating procedures for licensing and property management and handling the relationship with State and Municipal Government agents; From 2010 to 2014 was the legal coordinator of Trip Editora, the company with the largest number of custom publish projects in Brazil; From 2009 to 2010, was part of the labour practice group of Trench Rossi e Watanabe Advogados, associated with Baker & McKenzie; earlier in his career integrated the legal team of PepsiCo in Brazil.

Graduated from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP) with a Bachelor of Laws degree and has a L.L.C. in Business Law at Insper. Leonardo is member of Brazilian Bar Association. Native Portuguese speaker and fluent in English.

Moisés Sztejnsznajd

Analyst – Investments

Before joining Sharpen Capital in July 2018, Mr. Sztejnsznajd was an investment professional at BRL Capital, an asset management firm, working in the team managing the hedge fund BRL Titan; From 2013 to 2016 worked in the treasury department of Banco Indusval & Partners in the pricing and trading desks.

Graduated from Fundação Getúlio Vargas in São Paulo (FGV-EAESP), with a B.A in Business Administration. Native Portuguese speaker and fluent in English.

Bárbara Beato

Analyst – Investor Relations

Before joining Sharpen Capital in April 2019, Ms. Beato was an Analyst in the Corporate Banking Coverage group at Deutsche Bank supporting the senior relationship managers in the coverage of their portfolios of clients. From 2016 to 2017 worked in the Trade Finance Sales Team at Deutsche Bank.

Graduated from Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia in São Paulo (Mauá – SP) with a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering. Native Portuguese speaker and fluent in English.
